Spice Goa Sangolda Review: A Heritage Dining Experience Worth the Drive
A few months ago, we drove out to Spice Goa Sangolda for lunch, and it’s the kind of meal that’s stayed with me since. Tucked inside a beautifully restored Goan-Portuguese home in Sangolda, this restaurant blends old-world charm with an easy, unhurried energy. From the moment we walked in, the ambience set the tone — warm lighting, high ceilings, and that unmistakable heritage-home feel that’s hard to fake. We came hungry and left happy, having worked our way through prawns, fish, mocktails, and a dessert that’s now on our must-order list. Here’s our honest, first-hand review of the food, the drinks, and the vibe.
The Ambience: Dining Inside a Restored Goan-Portuguese Home
Spice Goa Sangolda sits inside a restored heritage bungalow in Mae-De-Deus Waddo, and it shows in every corner. High ceilings, warm wood tones, and statement lighting give the indoor seating a relaxed, old-Goa character, while the garden area outside is spacious enough for a big group or a quiet two-person dinner under the trees. The whole space feels built for long lunches and slow evenings rather than a quick bite. It’s run by the Shah family, whose Spice Goa brand has been serving Goan food since 1999 — Sangolda is their newer, more refined heritage-home outpost, and you can feel that experience in how smoothly it runs without losing its warmth.

What We Ordered: Food at Spice Goa Sangolda
The menu leans heavily into coastal Goan classics, and we let the seafood do most of the talking.
Prawns Wrapped in Banana Leaf — one of the restaurant’s signature dishes, and it’s easy to see why. It arrived fragrant and steaming, the banana leaf keeping the prawns moist while they soaked in the masala. Genuinely one of the better versions we’ve had in Goa.

Rawa Fried Bombil — crisp, semolina-coated Bombay duck, fried just right: crunchy outside, soft inside. It’s a simple dish that’s easy to get wrong, and Spice Goa Sangolda gets it right.
Goan Fish Thali — a proper, no-shortcuts thali with fish curry, rice, and the usual comforting sides. If you want an entire meal that captures home-style Goan cooking on one plate, this is it.
Calamari — tender and well-seasoned, not the rubbery disappointment calamari so often turns into elsewhere. A solid pick if you’re sharing starters.
Mocktails: Jack Sparrow & Smooth Operator
Spice Goa Sangolda runs its own in-house bar program, and we skipped alcohol in favour of two mocktails — Jack Sparrow and Smooth Operator. Both were fruity, well-balanced, and clearly made with the same care as the food, not an afterthought on the menu the way mocktails often are elsewhere.

Dessert: Gajar Halwa Modak
We ended with the Gajar Halwa Modak — a smart little fusion dessert. It takes the familiar modak shape and fills it with the warm, ghee-rich sweetness of gajar halwa. It’s a small dish, but it’s the kind of detail that tells you the kitchen is paying attention right to the end of the meal.

Our Verdict
Between the setting, the service, and the food, Spice Goa Sangolda earns its reputation as one of the better restaurants in Sangolda, Goa. Nothing felt rushed, and nothing felt like it was coasting on the venue’s good looks — the kitchen backed it up. Online, it’s consistently rated around 4 out of 5 by diners on platforms like Zomato and TripAdvisor, which matched our own experience. If you’re planning a trip to North Goa and want a sit-down meal that’s a step above the usual beach-shack fare, this is worth booking ahead for.
